When history came alive
In 2022, we took part in an exciting pilot project together with Norwegian Tourist Development and Voice of Norway to visualise Sandviken's unique history. We have written the texts ourselves and dug into the archives to be able to share the stories of how our place came to be. The result is a historical walk that makes the past visible to you as you stroll around the area. Here, facts and legends meet in a delightful mix that adds an extra dimension to your stay.
Bridal crown - The legend of the big stone
Without a doubt, the most mysterious stop on the walk is the large stone on the plain. How did it get there in the first place? An old legends tells the story of Jutulen in Håkanesfjellet who was hopelessly in love with Marit. When Marit sat in the boat on her way to the church, adorned with a glittering bridal crown, Jutulen was so enraged by jealousy that he threw a giant stone at the bridal party.
The stone sailed through the air, snatched the crown right off Marit's head and landed with a crash on the beach. At the same time, the sun's rays hit Jutulen and he cracked, but the bridal crown remained trapped under the giant boulder. To this day, legend has it that the crown sparkles down there in the depths. When the famous adventurers «Mina and me» visited us, the stone made such a big impression on little Mina that she was determined to return one day to lift it away. Would you like to give it a try? Maybe you'll be the one who manages to lift the stone and see the gold sparkle!
