Animals and farm life

Come back to a time when the sound of sheep bells and the smell of freshly baked rømmegrøt characterised everyday life. In Tinn, pastoral traditions are alive and well, and we invite you to visit our local farms for close contact with animals and flavoursome traditions.

A flavourful journey to the mountain pantry

No trip to Tinn is complete without tasting real, homemade farmhouse food. Our farms are well known for their traditional recipes that have been passed down through generations. Here you can enjoy everything from velvety-smooth rømmegrøt to locally produced cheeses that have won international awards.

Håvardsrud Seterliv in Skirvedalen is a perfect destination for families with children. Here, children can get close to the animals, and there are often horse riding and opportunities to participate in life on the farm. Combine your visit with a trip up to Numedalshovda for a fantastic view before rewarding yourself with notes and coffee in the mountain café.

Award-winning cheeses and historic sheep

For those interested in food, there are two stops that are mandatory:

  • Selstali seats: Located at the foot of Gaustatoppen and widely known for its legendary rømmegrøt. A perfect ending after a summit tour!
  • Bergstaulen seats: This farm has made its mark on the world map with its brown cheese, which has won awards at the World Cheese Championships. A real taste of Telemark that you can take home with you.

We are also proud of the work being done to preserve endangered livestock breeds. At Shoulder wool in Tessungdalen you can learn more about the special Grey Trøndersauen, and see how Turid Ree Bjørnerud has saved this breed and refined its unique, soft wool.

Wild animals in the wild

Although the zoo animals are domesticated, Tinn is also home to many wild animals. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the king of the forest, moose, along the forest roads at dusk. On Hardangervidda, Northern Europe's largest tribe of wild reindeer. To learn more about these majestic animals, we recommend a visit to Hardangervidda National Park Centre.

Tips for animal lovers: If your children dream of petting reindeer or seeing lynx and wolves up close, the Langedrag Nature Park only 1.5 hours drive away - a great day trip from Sandviken!
