The hunt for D/S Tinn
At 460 metres, Lake Tinnsjøen is one of Europe's deepest lakes, and its cold fresh water has a unique ability to preserve history. For technical divers, the most spectacular target is the wreck of the Learn about D/S Tinn. This steamship sank in 1915 off Sigurdsrud in Atrå, and today rests as a historical monument on the bottom.
We are regularly visited by the diving community who make the trip to Sandviken precisely to explore this wreck. Divers who have stayed with us have shared fantastic photos showing the ship's details, still preserved in the dark depths. This is diving for the advanced, but it illustrates the hidden treasures that can be found just off our quayside.
Clear water and dramatic formations
Even if you're not planning a deep dive to D/S Tinn, Lake Tinn offers excellent conditions for sport diving along the shore. The steep geology of Tinn is also reflected below the water surface, with dramatic rock walls and formations. The crystal-clear water often provides excellent visibility, making it an exciting experience to explore life along the bottom.
Practical information for divers
- Base at Sandviken: The campsite is an excellent starting point with easy access to the water via our swimming beach or boat slip.
- Safety: Diving in Lake Tinnsjøen requires experience with cold water and good buoyancy control. Always remember to dive with a buddy and follow all safety procedures.
- Air and equipment: We currently do not have an air filling station at the site, so divers must bring their own pre-filled cylinders and all necessary equipment.
- Documentation: We love to see pictures of life under water! Feel free to share your experiences with us at reception.
