Historical walking tour

Join us on a journey through Sandviken Camping's 70-year history. From Nils Olav's first hand-crafted log cabins to today's modern breathing space, each bend in the trail tells a story of passion, the forces of nature and a love of hosting in the heart of Telemark.

From wilderness to award-winning destination

Sandviken Camping wasn't built by big contractors, but by hands that have loved their craft. The historical walk around the site takes you back to 1971, when Nils Olav Fagerberg (grandfather) built the first cabins that still stand as proud monuments to Norwegian craftsmanship. As you walk between the cabins, you'll notice the detailed wood carvings and solid timber walls - details that have given their name to gems like «Kongehytta». Nils was a man of vision, and his spirit lives on in every corner of the campsite.

The walk is also a story about the battle against the forces of nature. In 2015, Sandviken experienced its greatest challenge when the flood raged and the waters from Tinnsjøen and Austbygdeåe met in the centre of the site. The story of how the family and the local community rose up, saved the historic cabins and rebuilt the site to become more robust and modern than ever is a central part of our identity. You'll see markers and memorabilia from this time that show how high the water actually stood, and how we've adapted to the landscape today to create a safe harbour for our guests.

The barn, the legend and the family

An important stop on the historical walk is the old barn, which has stood here since the campsite was just a small farm stop. Here you can visualise the time when the hay wagons rolled in, long before the first caravans found their way here. Not far away is the large legendary stone, which links the campsite to ancient folklore and the wrath of the Jutul. By combining the physical traces in the terrain with the stories we share, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why Sandviken feels like home to so many.

A living history in development

Today, it's the third generation of Fagerberg to welcome you, and we're proud to be Eco-Lighthouse certified and an award-winning campsite. The historical walk is not just a look back, but an explanation of why we are passionate about sustainability and hospitality today. We invite you to walk the trail at your own pace, read the information signs and maybe have a chat with the hosts - we always have a good story to tell about how Sandviken became the breathing space it is today.
