Wild reindeer on Hardangervidda

Join us for an encounter with the primeval animal on Northern Europe's largest high mountain plateau. Hardangervidda is the only area in the country where wild reindeer still have enough space for their natural migrations, giving you a unique opportunity to see this historic animal in its true element.

A rare chance to see the original animal

The wild reindeer originally roamed freely throughout Europe, but today they are only found in fragmented areas in southern Norway. More than a quarter of all wild reindeer in Norway live on the Hardangervidda plateau, which is the largest habitat we have left. This makes our region one of the most important places in the world for preserving this species. Although the herds are large, it takes both patience and a good eye to spot them in the vast landscape.

Along the national park route there are several organised viewpoints where you can stop and look out over the plains. If you take out your binoculars and look closely at the mountainsides many kilometres away, you may be lucky enough to see small dots moving in flocks - a sight that links us directly to the course of nature over thousands of years.

Respectful observation in nature

When travelling on Hardangervidda to look for wild reindeer, it's important to remember that we are guests in their home. Wild reindeer are very sensitive to disturbance, especially during vulnerable periods such as calving or during major migrations. The best experience is to observe the animals from a good distance with binoculars, so that they can continue their natural journey without stress.

For those looking for an even deeper dive into the world of the wild reindeer, hikes into the national park are a fantastic way to experience the grandeur of the plateau. The silence, the open horizons and the knowledge that Europe's last wild reindeer are close by make every trip to Hardangervidda something very special. If you're lucky, you'll spot the proud herd on the horizon today.
