The campsite is open all year, and the range of activities is adapted to the seasons in a way that makes every visit unique.

Summer at Tinnsjø Lake

Summer is peak season at Sandviken Camping. With a swimming beach, jetty, water trampoline, and crystal-clear water, Tinnsjøen lake is a natural focal point for young and old. For the very youngest, there are also interactive detective trails in collaboration with Detective Agency No. 2 – a unique activity that combines nature experience with excitement.

Do you want to explore the area? From the campsite, it's a short distance to Gaustatoppen (1883m), which has been voted Norway's most beautiful mountain and offers views over one-sixth of Norway on clear days. Cycling enthusiasts will love the routes along Austbygdeåe and the national mountain bike trails across the high mountains.

Autumn and spring – peace and nature experiences

Autumn brings golden colours to the mountainsides around Lake Tinnsjø, and the place becomes quieter and more intimate. It is a season for those who appreciate silence. The hiking routes in the local area, waterfalls thundering at full strength, and a summit hike to Gaustatoppen with views over golden valleys make Telemark a fantastic destination outside of the peak season as well.

In spring, nature awakens to life again, and the first visitors can experience the place almost to themselves – with fresh air, green surroundings, and lighter evenings. Ski trips on Hardangervidda are still possible in early spring, and the first cycling routes open up as the snow melts.

Winter – Snow adventures in Telemark

Did you know that Sandviken Camping is open all year round? In winter, the surroundings in Telemark are transformed into a white wonderland. Hardangervidda, Norway's – and Northern Europe's – largest mountain plateau, is a dream destination for ski touring and kiting. Here you can set off on skis directly from the campsite or seek out the prepared trails with panoramic views of Gaustatoppen. The wind and the open spaces also provide perfect conditions for fast-paced fun in the snow.

For climbers, Rjukan and its surroundings are world-renowned for their sheer ice walls, attracting enthusiasts from all over Europe during the winter months. And after a day out in the cold, there's nothing better than warming up in Ismåne – our wood-fired sauna with a panoramic window directly overlooking Lake Tinnsjø. The combination of wood-fired heat, ice, and water is one of the best experiences you can have here in this beautiful setting.

Sandviken Café – the taste of Tinn in the middle of the campsite

A good camping experience is more than just a place to sleep. At Sandviken Camping, you'll find our own café serving homemade food with an emphasis on local and sustainable ingredients. The café is the social heart of the campsite – here, guests from all corners of the world meet over a cup of coffee or a freshly baked local pizza.

Our menu includes, among other things, the popular «Tinn Taco», made with local Angus beef from the neighbouring farm, Eggerud Gard – a prime example of our close ties to the local community. We also offer a good selection of vegetarian dishes, and all pizza varieties can be made with a gluten-free base. The herbs used in our food are grown in the campsite’s own greenhouse.

With space for up to 35 guests indoors and a spacious outdoor pavilion, the café is perfect for everything from a quick lunch to a relaxing dinner with a view of the water.

Environmental Lighthouse – camping with a clear conscience

Sandviken Camping has chosen to take environmental responsibility seriously. Our campsite is certified as Miljøfyrtårn (Environmental Lighthouse) and has received the municipality of Tinns environmental award – recognitions that reflect our systematic work with sustainability.

In 2024, we reduced energy consumption by 5 %and greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 15 %. This is achieved through concrete measures such as environmentally friendly heat pumps, strict waste sorting, conscious purchasing of local and regional raw materials, and active work to phase out the unnecessary use of plastic. Disposable barbecues are banned on the entire campsite – instead, we offer fire pits by the cabins and sell locally sourced firewood from our own forest at reception. Every year, we publish a climate and environmental report documenting our goals and results.

When you choose Sandviken Camping, you are supporting a business that works to preserve the unique nature of Tinn for future generations. Here you can enjoy the beautiful Norwegian nature with a clear conscience.

A family history – several generations with a passion for hospitality

What makes Sandviken Camping truly special is the history and the people behind the place. It all began in 1927 when great-grandfather Olav Fagerberg bought the property. The family earned a living from sawmilling and farming, and in 1954, the very first camping guests pulled in – motorcyclists with sidecars looking for a place to stay for the night. It was the start of something big.

Since then, the campsite operation has grown and developed through three generational changes. Today, Annette Fagerberg – the fourth generation of the family on the property and the third generation to run the campsite – manages the site with a clear focus on sustainability, modernisation and hospitality. She has studied tourism, learned Spanish in Guatemala, worked on cruise ships and learned German to welcome the many German guests who visit the site each year. It is this type of dedication that truly leaves its mark on a stay.

Some of the historical log cabins were hand-built by grandfather Nils – and cabin number 19, which we call Ljåsmeden, is over 100 years old. These cabins are not just places to stay; they are parts of a story about the people who have shaped this place over several decades.

Activities in the local area – Telemark right on your doorstep

Sandviken Camping is strategically located for exploring all that Telemark has to offer.
